Celebrate Women – The World Cup and the Spotlight on Women

Posted On Jul 12 2019 by

One billion viewers watched the World Cup.  One billion.  Can we still discount woman?

Turns out we can. The article, So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend by Sue Bird, inspires me and warms my heart.

After saying she would never write again… She starts her article with –

I remember telling my editor here something like, “It would take the President of the United States going on a hate-filled Twitter spree trolling my girlfriend while she was putting American soccer, women’s sports, equal pay, gay pride and TRUE LOVE on her back, all at once, scoring two majestic goals to lead Team USA to a thrilling victory over France and a place in the World Cup SEMIFINALS, for me to ever even think about writing again.”

I strongly recommend you read the whole of it.  It’s really a love letter, to her sweetheart, Megan Rapinoe, and to the woman’s team and to all the teams playing.  It will warm your heart.  And trust me, we all want to be deeply and truly seen the way Sue Bird sees her partner.

Now contrast the president’s hate filled Twitter spree with these two Nike ads.

Nike Ads

These made me weep, and as my daughter Sasha says, in a good way.  One of my clients wanted to run right out and buy something from Nike to celebrate.

Title IX

All of this stands on passage of Title IX in 1972.  Women finally got some equal treatment in many arenas.  Women’s participation in sports sky rocketed.  I recommend you check this easy to read graphic on how Title IX has made a difference on Ohio University’s site.

Today, I look out my window and watch runners.  More than half are women.  That would not have been true prior to 1972.  On my hiking trails, the same thing – women.  Some of these women are my own daughters.  How great is that?

: )

May you walk in beauty,

One reviewer said:

At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book. To me, the beginning didn’t look all that promising. I feared that this was going to be just a compilation of pointless babble without any real practical application. Fortunately, I kept reading, and I’m glad I did. Soon I found myself bookmarking several pages and highlighting various key sentences, because I kept spotting helpful lessons that I knew I’d want to reread in the future.

My favorite parts include the section on mental judo, the one about being right versus being happy, and the questions to clear the mind. In more general terms, I’ve got to say that I really like the overall friendly and compassionate tone that the author employs throughout the book. It makes for a pleasant reading experience.
