The Twenty Second Smile, Bet It Will Change You

Posted On Mar 22 2017 by

I excerpted this post from my upcoming book – The Twenty Second Smile & Other Playful Wisdom: 37 Exactly-50-Word Chapters & Illustrations to Delight You, to Inspire Your Journey, and to Remind You of What Works. Enjoy this title chapter.  I have written about this before in different ways.  Twenty seconds may challenge you.  I find it difficult.  : ) Here’re your guidelines: Smile for twenty seconds as often as you remember to do it.  I’m smiling right now because writing this reminds me.  Can you feel it?  More to the point, can I?  Consciously paying attention to anything for …

Another Effing Opportunity to Grow

Posted On Nov 11 2016 by

The election the USA has just gone through provides you with another effing opportunity to grow. To start with, you get to study the grief cycle from the inside. So I notice, I spend time in DENIAL.  Shock, stunned, and numb are other ways to describe this state. ANGER – I find everything irritates me.  Blame is a subset of anger.  I blame all sorts of thing for the election results.  None of it needs to be based in fact, by the way.  I am upset disproportionately to the stimulus.  Sasha put the plastic spatula in the dishwasher – grrrr.  …

This Is O Rated for Older

Posted On Oct 13 2016 by

This will mean nothing to you if you haven’t reached a certain age.  O for Older people. A client asked me for some tips on surrendering in the middle of facing scary medical challenges.  I shared a very simple idea that has given me great comfort. Dear Athena, My favorite way to surrender at our age is to recall this instruction –       “Relax, you’re going to die.” I love this. Clearly, we’re going to die. We don’t know when, so we can relax. It will happen and it will happen the way it happens. We can’t get it wrong. …

The Best News You Don’t Know

Posted On Sep 29 2016 by

We just finished the first presidential debate for 2016 election.  Did you watch? I have recommended for years that people quit watching the news, reading it on-line, or getting it through social media. Why?  Because it scares you.  Fear drops you into fight-flight-paralysis.  And pretty much universally stops you from acting on the information your watching, making you impotent and hopeless. The other reason, is that you rarely hear any good news on those outlets.  Good news just doesn’t photograph as dramatically as another shooting or shouting match. Nicholas Kristof wrote a piece in the Sept. 22, 2016 N. Y. …

Starved for Color? Feast on More Color

Posted On Feb 11 2015 by

Starved for Color?  Feast on More Color Winter serves up gray and dark in the northern latitudes.  I find I get starved for color and my attitude goes dark.  The solution?  Easy, consume more color.  Nay, feast on color. The last three winters, I have gotten a cold.  One of the causes may be not consuming enough color. If you live in the gray darkness, you know.  Enough suffering. To be happy, healthy and energetically creative, you might try feasting on color. Fun Ways to Get More Color Take field trips. Art museums and galleries. Conservatories.  The Volunteer Park Conservatory …

Kindle Book Giveaway – Altar Making for Happiness

Posted On Dec 4 2014 by

Can Making Your Own Altars and Shrines Make You Happier This Holiday Season?  Like you maybe, I suffer during the holidays.  I did until I stumbled onto making altars.  One snowy Christmas at my parents home in northern Ohio, an inspiration grabbed me – create a mobile with origami cranes made from this beautiful red wrapping paper and found twigs… Hang it in the stairwell.  Make it Big. I did.  It took hours to create, happy hours spent in my right brain.  Recall, the right brain is the place to be if you wish to feel oneness, peace, and harmony.  …

Crazy No More –Three Practices That Always Work

Posted On Sep 25 2014 by

Three Practices That Always Work First, you suffer, I suffer all God’s children suffer – that is, we get caught in our mental habits of being right or wrong, making other people bad or better than us depending on the flavor of you craziness. Me? I’m just not good enough. Buddhism has a set of four vows, one of them says: The number of delusions are infinite. I vow to penetrate them all. When I feel crazy or delusions hit, these three practices always work to restore me to peace and wholeness. 1. Riding a bike – as long as …

Relax, You’re Going to Die

Today’s Oracle My software angels choose this oracle quote for you today:  217) From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone. — Alice Walker Nov. 5, 2008 in a letter to Barak Obama. You can use my Potent …

Buddha’s Brain

Posted On May 23 2012 by

Want to have Buddha mind?  Buddha mind is quiet and still, at one with  all.   Say, “Yes, William.”  You can think of your right brain as the Buddha brain.  Why?  Because the ceaseless mind chatter doesn’t happen in the right brain.  Chatter only occurs in your left brain.    When you move from the linear thinking left brain to the holistic right brain, you are in Buddha mode.  (See end of article for more neurology.)  I got The Art of Urban Sketching: Drawing On Location Around The World by Gabriel Campanario because I wanted to look at the pictures.  I have …

Sacred Oatmeal???

Posted On May 13 2011 by

In the first of our four Living with Magicality conversations Krysta Gibson talks about a surprisingly, cool transformational tool – eating oatmeal. (http://goo.gl/uLpMI) “How’s that?” you ask? It is cool, and I use it too. It reminds me of the silly joke – Buddha goes up to the hot dog vendor and says, “Make me one with everything.” Ho HoHo. As you are eating your oatmeal or your food of choice, consider … Where did it come from? How many people were involved to bring you your breakfast? Maybe a spouse. Certainly, farmers. And truckers. And the guys that built …
