Drinking a Bowl of Green I Stopped the War

Posted On Jun 14 2017 by

Most of my clients and my loved ones are suffering from Donald Trump’s predations, an internal war.  People find it hard not to get caught in the swirl of lies, unfairness, and  general meanness.  People have to scratch the itch asking: What’s happening?  What’s he done?  What have they done? “Freaking out” we used to call it. Quit it. Drinking a bowl of green tea, I stopped the war.  Paul Reps published this in his sweetly potent book, Zen Telegrams that he wrote it during the Vietnam War.  I read it in my 20s .  It changed my life.  And …

Playful Tool for Mindful Reflection

What would Pirate Girl say? Listening to the wild person inside of you can be a great place to make sense of your life.  You can play with writing an exactly-50-word story as a way to bring the words to your experiences. When you engage your playful side, you find the deeper wisdom that hides from your serious mind – the one you learned for school. To help open yourself, you can choose a pen name, or a Nom de Mischief, to write under, so you can be free of the judgment of others, even if they only live in …

Eating Less and Exercising More Doesn’t Work

Posted On Apr 25 2017 by

You know the recipe, to lose weight just eat less and exercise more.  It just makes sense.  But if you’ve tried to lose weight, most likely this hasn’t worked for you.  And it doesn’t work for anyone you know.  Quit it. First, exercise benefits you in multiple ways – especially strength training so keep doing it or consider adding it at some time. Second, it’s how you eat and what you eat that makes the difference.  As a person who has been dealing with my weight, fat, for my entire life, I notice I’m an addict.  Not a food addict, …

Celtic Seasons

Posted On Jul 28 2016 by

A better way to imagine the seasons can deepen your connection to home. In the USA, we mark the beginning of the seasons with the equinoxes and the solstices.  The Celts looked with a different eye.  They looked at light. The equinoxes of March 21st and September 21st mark the time when the days and the nights are of equal length.  And the solstices mark the longest day of the year in summer or the longest night of the year in winter. Find the halfway point between these events and you find the true beginning of the seasons.  August 1st …

Mysterious Madam Ling

Posted On Jul 3 2016 by

After I named my studio, Suzanne felt she wanted to get in on a good thing.  (See post.)  Since I named by studio the Chuckling Ferret Studio, Suzanne played with words, swirled them around and Chuckling became a guy – Chuck Ling,  hence Chuck Ling Ferret Studio. And since she is married to my nom de studio self, she felt that necessarily she became Mrs. Ling.  Further word play led to Madam Ling, then to The Mysterious Madam Ling. Now, it needed a favorite critter, marmot won the prize. Finally, she has The Mysterious Madam Ling’s Marmot Studio. Play is …

Nature Rx

Enjoy these two fun videos.  They’re tongue-in-cheek spoofs of the omnipresent pharmaceutical ads on TV. Spoofs they are, but they advertise a real benefit that research incontrovertibly supports.  That’s cool but more importantly – your common sense will recognize the truth. Fact: Nature heals you.  Just like medicine, only  better. : ) My New Book in Progress I’m writing a book with the working title – Finding Home – How the Love of Place Restores You.  I’ll tell you more about this cool book in later posts. Note the on-screen text that zips by in these videos for more humor. …

What’s the Sound Track of Home?

Posted On Jun 1 2016 by

As I walked through the woods around my brother, John’s, house on Cape Cod, I listened to the sounds of home.  I heard Blue Jays, Robins, Cardinals, and Mourning Doves.  His woods are populated by many more birds, but those stuck out. Whenever I stepped outside the house where I grew up in northern Ohio, I heard those songs and calls.  They formed the sound track for home. My sound track for home now is quite different.  Love of place will always have a sound track.  When I was growing up, I didn’t know I had a sound track, but …

Sabbatical Log

Posted On Mar 11 2016 by

Sabbatical Log People wonder what I do on my many sabbaticals.  Here’s what I did over the first two weeks in March. First, what is a sabbatical?  Sabbatical relates to Sabbath which in turn means rest.  The Sabbath and Sabbaticals set time aside so people can enjoy themselves and explore their connection to God.  For me, it’s about a period of time to connect to the Sacred more deeply. This doesn’t mean a time of solemn fasting and deprivation, but a time of joy and play.  Typically, I spend more time outdoors. As you may know, my most recent book, …

The last three winters, I have gotten a cold.  One of the causes may be not consuming enough color. If you live in the gray darkness, you know.  Enough suffering. To be happy, healthy and energetically creative, you might try feasting on color. Fun Ways to Get More Color Take field trips. Art museums and galleries. Urban Sketching as Path to Oneness

Urban Sketching as Path to Oneness Can you find the Sacred even in the city? Finding the Sacred in Nature can almost be automatic.  The study of awe tells us that when people are confronted by stunning beauty in nature, they go into awe.  Their inner chatter quiets.  Connection and reverence for all of Life arises. Just as sketching in Nature can feed your soul, urban sketching can be a wonderful way to connect to the Sacred everywhere.  Gabriel Campanario, a sketch artist for the Seattle Times, put the term Urban Sketching on the map.  I like it. The Pleasure of Making an Altar

Posted On Dec 12 2014 by

The Pleasure of Making an Altar Building an altar can be simple, easy, and playful.  And in this case, communal. And sometimes, rule breaking. “Dad, a jade plant is not a Christmas tree,” she said. “I beg to differ.  Jade’s sprit works for me.” The stuffed mouse was added by Suzanne.  The photo has been moved by several people.  What you can’t tell is that it is an image of an opened mouth, whistling marmot.  One of my totemic creatures.  He was at the birth of Christ.  It’s documented. This altar clearly has roots in my Christian heritage.  Make ones …

He Did Not Get It “The ‘sketches’ were not that great and not at all inspiring,” David Terry said in his Amazon review of my book – Sketching, Poetry, and the Sacred Present Moment: A Magically Potent Way To Savor Your Life. He didn’t get it. The sketches indeed are not great art – that’s the point.  This spiritual practice can be done by anyone, not just trained artists. Again, my goal for you – live a life you love wholeheartedly – body and soul.  Remember?  You have heard, no doubt, that laughing promotes good health.  Today, I will share the youtube Muppet Channel with you.  My daughter, Sasha, turned me onto this channel.  Laughing produces endorphins – happy brain chemicals that last.  Laughing produces other brain chemicals that promote health in other ways.  I love the Muppets in general and these videos in particular.  Enjoy.  Bohemian Rhapsody     Ode to Joy with Beaker     The Habanera from Carmen Featuring Beaker & the Swedish Chef  Wisdom Quotes …

Multitasking Crashes Your Brain

Posted On Nov 30 2011 by

Research confirms what you already know. Multitasking doesn’t work to save time and it makes you feel even more frantic.  It doesn’t make you more efficient.  You don’t get more done. And, just between us two, it stresses you out. Multitasking blocks your way to living a life you love, don’t you think?    Here’s the Research   The brain needs to attend to one task at a time. Top 10 Children’s Books

Posted On Nov 12 2011 by

One of my beloved clients who is also a colleague asked me, “What are William’s top ten favorite children’s books.”  Why?  Because we were having a conversation about how difficult the holidays can be for people.  I told her that I read books to my inner child.  I had a wonderful collection of excellent ones.  These are all picture books.  Many are award winners.  Many of these make me laugh, some make me cry.  They all heal my inner child and make the dark season deeper and more lovely.  May these bless you as well.  And the children in your …

Altar Making Spoke to His Heart

Posted On Jul 30 2011 by

Richard, a long time member of Body & Soul Mentor, sent me this very moving response to his reading Altar Making.  I thought you’d be inspired. This moment I have downloaded your “Altar Making” and I find it just marvelous. Thank you. It spoke to my heart immediately. When reading your piece, I was vividly remembered of my youth when I fabricated a lot of “thinking points” in our backyard, on the fence to my father’s house, on my way to school… which in retrospect I would probably call “altars” now. I have e.g. always felt in a very particular way …

Why This Poem?

Posted On Jun 29 2011 by

My co-author, Char Sundust, performed a lovely wedding last week.  Each of the 170 attendees received a little beautiful scroll tied with a ribbon.  And Char says, “I took one and opened it.  Inside was your wonderful Love Poem For Mature Hearts.  My heart was so moved…” Love Poem for Mature Heart Love is foolish. Certain loss waits for you. So what!? Throw yourself away, And love. Why would someone choose this poem?  Would you? Why would I write this for a couple in their 50s getting married?  How is this a blessing? Can you perceive why I designated “for …
