Playful Tool for Mindful Reflection

What would Pirate Girl say? Listening to the wild person inside of you can be a great place to make sense of your life.  You can play with writing an exactly-50-word story as a way to bring the words to your experiences. When you engage your playful side, you find the deeper wisdom that hides from your serious mind – the one you learned for school. To help open yourself, you can choose a pen name, or a Nom de Mischief, to write under, so you can be free of the judgment of others, even if they only live in …

Mysterious Madam Ling

Posted On Jul 3 2016 by

After I named my studio, Suzanne felt she wanted to get in on a good thing.  (See post.)  Since I named by studio the Chuckling Ferret Studio, Suzanne played with words, swirled them around and Chuckling became a guy – Chuck Ling,  hence Chuck Ling Ferret Studio. And since she is married to my nom de studio self, she felt that necessarily she became Mrs. Ling.  Further word play led to Madam Ling, then to The Mysterious Madam Ling. Now, it needed a favorite critter, marmot won the prize. Finally, she has The Mysterious Madam Ling’s Marmot Studio. Play is …

Chuck Ling Ferret Studio

“What’s the name of your studio?”  I gently inquire. “Huh?” you wonder. “What’s the name of your studio?  What do you call the place where you do your creative work? “You do have a place to do art and to work on creative projects don’t you?” If you want to build your right brain, and I assure you that you do, then you need to have a studio. It needn’t be more than a flat surface in the corner of a room stocked with cool pens where you can doodle.  But setting aside space gives this aspect of your life …

Nature Rx

Enjoy these two fun videos.  They’re tongue-in-cheek spoofs of the omnipresent pharmaceutical ads on TV. Spoofs they are, but they advertise a real benefit that research incontrovertibly supports.  That’s cool but more importantly – your common sense will recognize the truth. Fact: Nature heals you.  Just like medicine, only  better. : ) My New Book in Progress I’m writing a book with the working title – Finding Home – How the Love of Place Restores You.  I’ll tell you more about this cool book in later posts. Note the on-screen text that zips by in these videos for more humor. …

What’s the Sound Track of Home?

Posted On Jun 1 2016 by

As I walked through the woods around my brother, John’s, house on Cape Cod, I listened to the sounds of home.  I heard Blue Jays, Robins, Cardinals, and Mourning Doves.  His woods are populated by many more birds, but those stuck out. Whenever I stepped outside the house where I grew up in northern Ohio, I heard those songs and calls.  They formed the sound track for home. My sound track for home now is quite different.  Love of place will always have a sound track.  When I was growing up, I didn’t know I had a sound track, but …

A Quintessential Seattle Sight

A Quintessential Seattle Sight On my morning constitutional, I saw this heron standing on a post with the Space Needle in the background across Elliot Bay. Fun for me to see and draw – Iconic Seattle. In my book, Color the Sky Yellow: Creative Magic, Playful Art for Your Inner Child, I talk about making your own coloring book by inking in some outlines and then coloring in the rest of the image any way you want.  You can see I did just that here. Besides showing you a pretty picture, I want to point out that I colored it …

Sabbatical Log

Posted On Mar 11 2016 by

Sabbatical Log People wonder what I do on my many sabbaticals.  Here’s what I did over the first two weeks in March. First, what is a sabbatical?  Sabbatical relates to Sabbath which in turn means rest.  The Sabbath and Sabbaticals set time aside so people can enjoy themselves and explore their connection to God.  For me, it’s about a period of time to connect to the Sacred more deeply. This doesn’t mean a time of solemn fasting and deprivation, but a time of joy and play.  Typically, I spend more time outdoors. As you may know, my most recent book, …

Starved for Color?  Feast on More Color Winter serves up gray and dark in the northern latitudes.  I find I get starved for color and my attitude goes dark.  The solution?  Easy, consume more color.  Nay, feast on color. The last three winters, I have gotten a cold.  One of the causes may be not consuming enough color. If you live in the gray darkness, you know.  Enough suffering. To be happy, healthy and energetically creative, you might try feasting on color. Fun Ways to Get More Color Take field trips. Art museums and galleries. Your Sketch Is Precious

Posted On Feb 1 2015 by

Your Sketch Is Precious Let me tell you a story.  You may know that my dad was a premier art museum director.  I grew up in a home with masterpieces everywhere, and the museum, which was Dad’s second home, displayed some of the world’s best art. My mom sketched.  She did it for love and never thought much of her skills.  Dad framed a small piece of hers.  Just one. As they aged, they moved to smaller homes, selling off art on the way.  Mom’s sketch made with colored markers remained even into the last and smallest apartment Dad lived …

Stay Healthy During Flu Season

Posted On Jan 7 2015 by

Stay Healthy During Flu Season You can stay healthy during flu season.  Just attend to a few simple ideas.  Really. “Blaming disease on germs is like blaming stagnant water on mosquitoes.” This simple notion forms the basis of staying well.  The prescription?  Don’t get stagnant.  Get your juices moving. Get Your Juices Moving This can be quite literal.  Where are your juices?  You recall the counterintuitive notion that your body is mostly made up of water.  The water resides in three places – You cells Your blood And the little known  lymphatic vessels and the interstitial fluid.  Interstitial fluid makes …

Urban Sketching as Path to Oneness

Posted On Dec 17 2014 by

Urban Sketching as Path to Oneness Can you find the Sacred even in the city? Finding the Sacred in Nature can almost be automatic.  The study of awe tells us that when people are confronted by stunning beauty in nature, they go into awe.  Their inner chatter quiets.  Connection and reverence for all of Life arises. Just as sketching in Nature can feed your soul, urban sketching can be a wonderful way to connect to the Sacred everywhere.  Gabriel Campanario, a sketch artist for the Seattle Times, put the term Urban Sketching on the map.  I like it. I invite …

The Pleasure of Making an Altar

Posted On Dec 12 2014 by

The Pleasure of Making an Altar Building an altar can be simple, easy, and playful.  And in this case, communal. And sometimes, rule breaking. “Dad, a jade plant is not a Christmas tree,” she said. “I beg to differ.  Jade’s sprit works for me.” The stuffed mouse was added by Suzanne.  The photo has been moved by several people.  What you can’t tell is that it is an image of an opened mouth, whistling marmot.  One of my totemic creatures.  He was at the birth of Christ.  It’s documented. This altar clearly has roots in my Christian heritage.  Make ones …

Posted On Dec 4 2014 by

Can Making Your Own Altars and Shrines Make You Happier This Holiday Season?  Like you maybe, I suffer during the holidays.  I did until I stumbled onto making altars.  One snowy Christmas at my parents home in northern Ohio, an inspiration grabbed me – create a mobile with origami cranes made from this beautiful red wrapping paper and found twigs… Hang it in the stairwell.  Make it Big. I did.  It took hours to create, happy hours spent in my right brain.  Recall, the right brain is the place to be if you wish to feel oneness, peace, and harmony.  …

He Did Not Get It “The ‘sketches’ were not that great and not at all inspiring,” David Terry said in his Amazon review of my book – Sketching, Poetry, and the Sacred Present Moment: A Magically Potent Way To Savor Your Life. He didn’t get it. The sketches indeed are not great art – that’s the point.  This spiritual practice can be done by anyone, not just trained artists. Buddha’s Brain

Posted On Jul 19 2012 by

Want to have Buddha mind?  Buddha mind is quiet and still, at one with  all. Say, “Yes, William.” You can think of your right brain as the Buddha brain.  Why?  Because the ceaseless mind chatter doesn’t happen in the right brain.  Chatter only occurs in your left brain. When you move from the linear thinking left brain to the holistic right brain, you are in Buddha mode.  (See end of article for more neurology.) I got The Art of Urban Sketching: Drawing On Location Around The World by Gabriel Campanario because I wanted to look at the pictures.  I have …

Pilgrimage: a Calling to Your Heart and Your Soul

Posted On Mar 19 2012 by

How, then, can we recalibrate the speed of our lives in such a way that it honors, mirrors, and is readily informed by, the speed of the human heart?  If we don’t, how can we possibly imagine ever getting “caught up” to anything sacred, deeply authentic, loving, healing, or sufficient?  How will we feel we are ever getting closer to catching up with some quiet contentment, sustained in the gentle pace of the heart, of living at the speed of enough?  Wayne Muller from A Life of Being, Having, and Doing Enough   Feeling out of touch with my soul, hungry …

Multitasking Crashes Your Brain

Posted On Nov 30 2011 by

Research confirms what you already know. Multitasking doesn’t work to save time and it makes you feel even more frantic.  It doesn’t make you more efficient.  You don’t get more done. And, just between us two, it stresses you out. Multitasking blocks your way to living a life you love, don’t you think?    Here’s the Research   The brain needs to attend to one task at a time. Surprisingly, when measuring neural activity with people doing two tasks at once, the neural activity decreased instead of what you might think. You might think your brain would be processing twice as …

Top 10 Children’s Books

Posted On Nov 12 2011 by

One of my beloved clients who is also a colleague asked me, “What are William’s top ten favorite children’s books.”  Why?  Because we were having a conversation about how difficult the holidays can be for people.  I told her that I read books to my inner child.  I had a wonderful collection of excellent ones.  These are all picture books.  Many are award winners.  Many of these make me laugh, some make me cry.  They all heal my inner child and make the dark season deeper and more lovely.  May these bless you as well.  And the children in your …

Altar Making Spoke to His Heart

Posted On Jul 30 2011 by

Richard, a long time member of Body & Soul Mentor, sent me this very moving response to his reading Altar Making.  I thought you’d be inspired. This moment I have downloaded your “Altar Making” and I find it just marvelous. Thank you. It spoke to my heart immediately. When reading your piece, I was vividly remembered of my youth when I fabricated a lot of “thinking points” in our backyard, on the fence to my father’s house, on my way to school… which in retrospect I would probably call “altars” now. I have e.g. always felt in a very particular way …

Spiritual Practice & Carnegie Hall

Posted On Jul 8 2011 by

You know this one: A visitor to New York City asks a local guy, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” The local says, “Practice. Practice. Practice!” Today, I ask you, “How do you get to live a life you love?” Same answer, “Practice!” I have a practice of practicing those things that keep me living a life I love.  Over the year I have tried many things.  In a moment, I’ll share one with you, but first a ground rule. There is no living happily ever after without continual practices. Happiness is about circumstances, about chance.  Living a life …

Sacred Oatmeal???

Posted On May 13 2011 by

In the first of our four Living with Magicality conversations Krysta Gibson talks about a surprisingly, cool transformational tool – eating oatmeal. (http://goo.gl/uLpMI) “How’s that?” you ask? It is cool, and I use it too. It reminds me of the silly joke – Buddha goes up to the hot dog vendor and says, “Make me one with everything.” Ho HoHo. As you are eating your oatmeal or your food of choice, consider … Where did it come from? How many people were involved to bring you your breakfast? Maybe a spouse. Certainly, farmers. And truckers. And the guys that built …
